Classes start today for students at Haskell

Fall semester classes begin today at Haskell Indian Nations University. School officials expect nearly 1,150 students.

Last week, student enrollment for the semester included 680 students returning from last year, 117 former students returning from previous years, 88 transfers from other tribal colleges and 259 new students.

Community: Salvation Army leaders to change next month

Leadership of the Lawrence Salvation Army is changing hands.

Richard and Judy Forney will become administrators of the local post starting Sept. 2. They replace Cpts. Kirk and Carolyn Schuetz, who have served in Lawrence since July 1997. The Schuetzes are being transferred to the Northland Corps in Kansas City, Mo.

The Forneys served as Salvation Army officers, both in the United States and abroad, for 28 years before resigning their commissions five years ago. They have continued to serve the organization.

Richard Forney’s father, Lewis, commanded the Salvation Army in Lawrence from 1948 to 1952.

Hawk Week continues as start of classes nears

Hawk Week events continue today as the first day of classes near at Kansas University.

From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., the area in front of Wescoe Hall will feature cultural performances, information tables, food and games for “Take Over the Beach.” At 8 p.m. the annual student convocation will be staged in the Lied Center.
