Students pick up tickets for KU football, basketball

Monday marked the kickoff day for Kansas University students to pick up their combination ticket packages for football and basketball games.

Doug Vance, assistant athletic director for media relations, said about 6,300 students purchased the ticket packages this year. That’s about the same number as recent years.

The packages are $100 each. Football-only season tickets cost $25 for students.

Pickup for student tickets continues through Aug. 30.

Petition launched to elect Knight this fall

A statewide petition was launched Monday to get Wichita Mayor Bob Knight elected governor as an independent candidate.

Wichita community activist Treatha Brown-Foster said she would be traveling the state to gather support for Knight. Starting next week, a petition asking for support will be published in major newspapers across the state, she said.

“Kansas is facing some very tough economic times, and we need a governor with a proven track record of getting results and telling the truth,” Brown-Foster said.

Knight finished third in the Aug. 6 GOP gubernatorial primary.

Douglas County

Health department sees no West Nile panic

The discovery last week of a blue jay dead from the West Nile virus in Douglas County apparently hasn’t set off a panic. Kay Kent, director of the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department, said Monday her department had received no requests to examine people for the virus.

Even if the request was made, she said, officials with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment recommend testing only when a person has symptoms of the virus.

Most people who get infected with West Nile virus don’t know it. Some get flulike symptoms: fever, headache, body aches and swollen lymph glands. More severe infections can lead to encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain.

Thousands sign up for no-call list

More than 180,000 Kansans signed up for the state’s no-call list in only its first week, the Kansas Attorney General’s Office reported Monday.

“Kansas consumers are sending a strong message to telemarketers that they don’t want unsolicited sales calls at home,” Atty. Gen. Carla Stovall said.

Stovall also said her office received reports that a group or individual had been contacting consumers and offering to register them on the no-call list for a fee. She said the offer was a scam. Kansans can register with the state for free. To report such illegal activity, call (800) 432-2310.
