Harrison Hill left a gaping hole in Kansas University’s football program when chronic dehydration forced him to leave the team on Sunday.

Not only was the senior co-captain the third-leading receiver in KU history, he was listed No. 1 at three different positions on the original preseason depth chart.

When KU released its first updated depth chart Wednesday, senior Byron Gasaway had moved up one spot and replaced Hill as a starting receiver. Sophomore Brandon Rideau remained No. 1 at the other receiver position.

On special teams, junior cornerback Remuise Johnson replaced Hill at punt returner, while red-shirt freshman quarterback Brian Luke took Hill’s spot as holder.

Elsewhere, Greg Nicks has competition for long-snapper duties from junior college transfer Andy Coffman. They are listed as co-No. 1s.

Wednesday’s practice sessions were closed to the media, and coach Mark Mangino was unavailable for comment on the changes.

Meanwhile, Zach Dyer has the edge in the battle for the starting job at quarterback. Listed at No. 1 in the new depth chart, Dyer, a junior, shared the starting spot with junior classmate Bill Whittemore prior to two-a-days. Whittemore, however, has recovered from the shoulder injury that slowed him during spring drills and is expected to push Dyer during two-a-days, which end Aug. 21.

There also were changes on the offensive line. Nicks, a senior who was listed as No. 1 at right guard and No. 2 at center, is now No. 1 at center ahead of red-shirt freshman Justin Henry.

Senior John Henry, who was nowhere to be found on the previous two-deep chart, is No. 1 at right guard.

The battle for the starting job at tailback remains a dead heat between junior Reggie Duncan and red-shirt freshman Clark Green.

Three junior college transfers have shaken up the defensive line. Juniors Cory Kipp and Reggie Curry are listed No. 2 at defensive end behind senior Charlie Dennis and David McMillan, knocking senior Brandon Lacy off the two-deep list.

Red-shirt freshman Tim Allen has taken the No. 1 spot at nose tackle ahead of junior transfer Sid Bachmann. Junior Brock Teddleton had been been listed No. 1 at that position prior to two-a-days.

Teddleton has a Sept. 18 trial date in a misdemeanor battery case.

In the secondary, red-shirt freshman Donnie Amadi has moved into co-No. 1 status with sophomore cornerback Leo Bookman. Twin Ronnie Amadi took his brother’s spot as backup at the other corner behind Johnson.

Bookman has taken Green’s spot as backup kick returner behind junior receiver Derick Mills. Sophomore Jerod Brooks replaced sophomore kicker/punter Chris Tyrrell as the backup to sophomore kicker Johnny Beck.
