McCourt services

He was born Sept. 2, 1911, the son of James S. and Catherine Hegarty McCourt, on a rural farm in Atchison County in the Mooney Creek vicinity.

He later was a decorated World War II veteran who had served overseas in Europe with the U.S. Army.

After the war, he worked for the Kansas Highway Commission, which later was named the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Mr. McCourt moved to Lawrence in 1950 and was appointed resident engineer in 1969, a position he held until his retirement in 1977.

He was married to Naomi Land on Aug. 19, 1983, in Lawrence. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include four stepdaughters; Debra Kuhn, Terrell, Tex.; Phyllis Engum, Waconia, Minn.; Linda New, Lompoc, Calif., and Raenae Bray, Fort Worth, Tex.; eight stepgrandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

His first wife, Florence Barnes McCourt, a stepdaughter, Patricia Land, and a stepgrandson died earlier.

A rosary prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
