Vermeil: Wins in preseason not important

? Kansas City Chiefs head coach Dick Vermeil has three simple goals for tonight’s preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers.

“Number one: don’t get anybody hurt,” he said. “Number two: play with some poise, limited number of penalties. Number three: see everybody play. I want to see everybody play.”

While Vermeil said the starters would play all, or most, of the first quarter, he was also adamant about letting every available player see action.

“Every once in a while somebody doesn’t get in the ballgame. If that happens, that happens,” he said. “But our plan is to play every football player that we suit up.”

Vermeil said that will include players like defensive end Duane Clemons, defensive tackle John Browning and offensive tackle Willie Roaf, who have been in and out of practice since the start of training camp.

“We’ll get them started,” he said. “Maybe like 12 plays, Roaf maybe more. He’d like to play with the first unit. He feels he needs it and he feels confident about it.”

As far as how much the first unit will play tonight, Vermeil said it might not be a full quarter.

Vermeil said the first unit might not play a full quarter.

“A lot depends on how many snaps you have,” he said. “You can go a first quarter and play six snaps. You can go the first quarter and play 18.”

Vermeil also said all four quarterbacks would see action against the 49ers. He said despite the stellar training camp performance of free agent quarterback Ryan Quinn, Joe Germaine is still listed as third on the depth chart behind Trent Green and Todd Collins. But he added that could change depending on the performance of the quarterbacks Saturday night.

“The depth chart in regards to that picture will be determined as we go through the pre-season and game experience,” he said.

Vermeil said the only position he’s concerned about as far as injuries go is right tackle. John Tait and Willie Jones will not play, which means Marcus Spears will get the start with Victor Allotey also seeing some action. Spears is also expected to fill in for Roaf at left tackle when the second unit hits the field.

The Chiefs’ biggest challenge may be limiting their penalties. Even though officials were on the field last weekend when the Chiefs practiced with the Vikings, Vermeil said the players will be scrutinized a lot closer in the first pre-season game.

“The other day, holy cow, I don’t know why those officials came to Minnesota,” he said. “A lot of holding was going on. We really try to prevent that because we just don’t think we can take a chance of losing a big play on a big penalty.”

Notes: The only player not injured who Vermeil said would not play Saturday night is kicker Morten Andersen. He said he would rest Andersen and let Lawrence Tynes handle all of the field goal and kickoff duties… Other players who will not see action due to injury are wide receivers Marvin Minnis (foot), Marc Boerigter (appendicitis) and Pete Rebstock (back), along with cornerback Central McClellion (hip) and linebacker Glenn Cadrez (foot).
