Retreat participants to be welcomed

Hymn sing slated at Presbyterian church

An old-fashioned hymn sing has started Sundays between fellowship time at 10:30 a.m. and morning worship at 11 a.m. at West Side Presbyterian Church, 1024 Kasold Drive.

At 10:50 a.m., “gathering” music is featured in the sanctuary, with hymns requested at random.

Sisters to sponsor dance performance

Liberty, Mo. The Benedictine Sisters of Kansas City is sponsoring a performance of island-style and modern dance at 7 p.m. Friday and Aug. 17 at the Liberty Performing Arts Theatre, 1600 S. Withers Road.

Program combines stories, music

Topeka A program of storytelling and music will be featured at the 8:15 a.m., 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. services Sunday at First United Methodist Church of Topeka, 600 S.W. Topeka Blvd.

Author Jonathan Richard Cring will share from his novel, “I’m … the legend of the son of man,” a diary of the life and times of Jesus. Janet Clazzy Scott will be performing on oboe, piano and the WX-5 Wind Machine a midi-enhanced horn featuring 250 different instruments. The pair has performed across the United States and Canada and will be touring the continent of Europe.

Cring is the author of three novels, a classical composer and a winner of a Billboard Music Award. Scott is a veteran of many orchestras, a former professor and conductor of the Sumner County Symphony.

Liturgies, rosary scheduled next week

The liturgies celebrating the feast of the assumption of Mary into heaven will be at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m., 12:10 p.m. and 6 p.m. Thursday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1234 Ky.

At the end of the 6 p.m. Thursday liturgy, a rosary will be prayed in the Jubilee Memorial Garden. After the rosary, participants will return to the church for benediction.

Catered oneg, Shabbat planned at center

The Lawrence Jewish Community Center, 917 Highland Drive, will have a special Shabbat evening starting at 7:45 p.m. Friday. After the services, a catered oneg reception in honor of Jewish newcomers to Lawrence will be offered. The center’s new spiritual leader, Rabbi Scott White, will attend.

Calvary Temple to mark school’s return

Sunday is “Back to School Sunday” at Calvary Temple Assembly of God, 606 W. 29th Terrace. All children who will be returning to school will receive school supplies.

The last series of “The Nine Gifts of the Holy Spirit” seminar will be at 6:30 p.m. Sunday. The session will center on speaking in tongues and prophecy. The session is free and open to the public.

Gathering planned for young adults

Chris Carter and Susan Campbell will host a gathering for those ages 20-30 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today in the parish hall at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt.

The Rev. Grant Clowers will be the guest priest at the 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Sunday services.

The Adult Forum will be a video titled “Ground Zero Spirituality,” the story of St. Paul’s Chapel and the involvement of people on Sept. 11. The chapel is in near the World Trade Center site.

Rummage sale to raise money for outreach

Trinity Lutheran Church, 1245 N.H., will have a rummage and bake sale from 7 a.m. to noon today in the church’s Fellowship Hall. A variety of furniture, household goods, children’s clothing and toys, and exercise equipment will be for sale, along with homemade baked goods.

Proceeds from the sale will benefit various outreach projects of Trinity’s Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the KU Strategic Learning Center, which is at the church.

Also, the women of the ELCA at Trinity Lutheran Church helped raise money for Camp Tomah Shinga-Lutheran Outdoor Ministries in Junction City. They donated a queen-size patchwork quilt to an auction Aug. 3 at the camp. Camp Tomah Shinga is a year-round Christian Bible camp, renewal retreat and conference center.

Sisters to talk at Aglow meeting

Lawrence Aglow will meet from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at Vermont Towers, 1101 Vt.

Sisters Julie Crowell and Linda Maley will be the guest speakers. They will talk about their work on American Indian reservations in South Dakota, Nevada and Oregon.

C.S. Lewis focus of special programs

A reading of “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” by the Rev. Tom Hanks will be at 6 p.m. today at First Baptist Church, 1330 Kasold Drive. Hanks is an English teacher at Baylor University in Waco, Tex.

Hanks also will be the guest speaker at the 8:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. services Sunday. He will talk on C.S. Lewis and his child-like imagination.

Baptist Temple begins Bible course

Lawrence Baptist Temple, 3201 W. 31st St., is starting a videocassette-based Bible learning course from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays, beginning Aug. 17.

The course will focus on the Old Testament, New Testament and Baptist doctrine. There is a $10 application fee, and course materials will be provided. No previous educational background in Bible studies is necessary.

Those interested in learning about the program are welcome to attend the first class session Aug. 17 at no charge and may then enroll by the second class.
