Dean of students

Name: Richard Johnson.

Start date: 2001.

Career: Before coming to KU, Johnson was assistant to the vice chancellor for student affairs at the universities of Missouri and Vermont. Johnson was brought in to improve student retention, facilitate student development and enhance diversity. The dean of students is responsible for campus social, cultural and educational life.

Dean of libraries

Name: Stella Bentley

Start date: 2001

Career: Bentley oversees KU’s extensive library system, which serves nearly 26,000 students and includes 3.3 million books and 27,000 current serial titles housed in seven library facilities on the Lawrence and Overland Park campuses. Bentley previously was the dean of libraries at Auburn University.

Executive vice chancellor/provost

Name: David Shulenburger.

Start date: 1996.

Career: Shulenburger had already been at KU for more than 15 years before taking his current position. He had previously been vice chancellor for academic affairs. The provost position was created to combine the responsibilities he had in academic affairs with the duties of executive vice chancellor for the Lawrence campus. Shulenburger joined the KU faculty in 1974 as an assistant professor of business.

Senior vice provost

Name: Kathleen McCluskey-Fawcett

Start date: 1996

Career: McCluskey-Fawcett became senior vice provost, overseeing academic affairs and student services, this summer following a year as interim dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She previously served as associate provost since 1996. She began her career at KU in 1985 and has served as associate dean of the CLAS, chair of the department of psychology, and associate vice chancellor for academic affairs.

Vice provost for scholarly support

Name: Richard Givens.

Start date: 1996.

Career: Givens began in the provost’s office in 1996 and served as assistant provost before receiving his new title this summer. He came to KU in 1976 and has been a professor of chemistry, chair of the chemistry department, director of the Center for Bioanalytical Research and associate vice chancellor for academic affairs.

Vice provost for faculty development

Name: Sandra Gautt.

Start date: 1996.

Career: Gautt was assistant provost since 1996 before getting her new title of vice provost this summer. She oversees faculty and instructional development and works on faculty policy issues. She began teaching in KU’s department of special education beginning in 1990. Before that, she taught at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Vice provost for information services

Name: Marilu Goodyear.

Start date: 1999.

Career: Goodyear was promoted to her current position after working as associate vice chancellor for Information Services at KU. A native of Independence, Mo., she came to KU in 1996 from Texas A&M University. At A&M, she led the technical implementation of a cooperative program that connected 52 public academic libraries in the state.

Vice provost for research: Robert Barnhill

Start date: 1997

Career: Barnhill is a Lawrence native. When hired at KU, he was vice provost for Research at Arizona State University. His job at KU is to coordinate all funded and non-funded research activity on the Lawrence campus. KU is consistently among the top 100 research universities in the nation in research grant awards and outpaces all other Kansas universities.

Vice provost for administration and finance: Lindy Eakin

Start date: 1996

Career: Eakin’s career at KU began in 1983, when he served as assistant to the dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He later worked at the KU School of Medicine campus in Wichita and as director of budget management and fiscal services before becoming associate vice chancellor in 1991.

Vice provost for facilities planning and management: Jim Long

Start date: 1999

Career: Long came to KU in 1983 as director of the Kansas and Burge Unions. He added the title associate vice chancellor for student affairs in 1994, before taking his current position in 1999. Before coming to KU, he worked at Emporia State University and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

Executive Vice Chancellors

Executive vice chancellor for University Relations: Janet Murguia

Start date: 2001

Career: A native of the Argentine district of Kansas City, Kan., Murguia graduated from KU with three degrees, including a doctorate in law in 1985. She worked in the White House in several capacities under President Bill Clinton starting in 1994. She was deputy campaign manager for the Gore-Lieberman presidential campaign. At KU Murguia oversees the university’s internal and external relations with the public, including governmental and public affairs.

Executive vice chancellor for Kansas University Medical Center: Donald Hagen

Start date: 1995

Career: Hagen is the chief administrator for KU Medical Center. He has considerable experience in medicine and health care management before coming to KU, including once holding the position of the Surgeon General of the U.S. Navy. He also was commanding officer of Bethesda Naval Hospital and the Naval Hospital at Camp Pendleton, Calif. Hagen has streamlined and consolidated separate clinical practice foundations into a unified approach at KUMC.
