Army Reserve Pvt. Darren Flory has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C. He is the son of Murray Flory, Lawrence, and Patty Frost, Topeka. He is a 2001 graduate of Lawrence High School.

Army Reserve Pfc. R. Travis Laduke has graduated from the heavy-wheeled vehicle mechanic advanced individual training course at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C. He is the son of Linda Miley, Grantville, and David Laduke, Lecompton. He is a 2001 graduate of Perry-Lecompton High School.

Matthew Tate has joined the U.S. Army under the Delayed Entry Program. The program gives young men and women the opportunity to delay entering active duty for up to one year. The enlistment gives the new soldier the option to learn a new skill, travel and become eligible to receive as much as $50,000 toward a college education. After completion of basic military training, soldiers receive advanced individual training in their career job specialty before being assigned to their first permanent duty station. The recruit qualifies for a $3,000 enlistment bonus.

Tate has reported to Fort Sill in Lawton, Okla., for basic training. He is the son of George and Jennifer Tate, Tonganoxie.
