Brett and Misty Finney, Winfield, announce the birth of their son, Cole Robert Finney, born July 12, 2002, in Winfield. He has two sisters, Kayleigh, 6, and Erica, 2. Grandparents are Cindy Flippo, Lawrence, and Robert and Nancy Finney, Burden. Steve and Lori Harris, Madison, Ala., announce the birth of their son, Bowen David Harris, born June 22, 2002, at Crestwood Medical Center in Huntsville, Ala.

Bowen has a sister, Carsyn, 1.

Keith and Jan Wisdom, Overland Park, announce the birth of their son, Seth Ethan Wisdom, born July 4, 2002, at Menorah Medical Center in Overland Park.

Grandmothers are Doris Johnson, Lawrence, and Nadine Wisdom, Roeland Park.

Gabrielle Cummins and Ryan Grinnell, Lawrence, announce the birth of their son, Jaden Onangizes Cummins-Grinnell, born June 21, 2002, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Several area students attended Level 1 of the Future Astronaut Training Program at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson. The intense, weeklong program incorporates actual astronaut training with briefings on subjects ranging from how the body reacts to spaceflight to principles of rocketry.

Those who attended were Jesse Coatney, son of Denise Coatney; Alyssa Thiel, daughter of Sarah and David Thiel; Jake Hamilton, son of Phil and Patricia Hamilton; Becca Dirks, daughter of Jean Dirks and Tom Cravens; Lily Boyce, daughter of Kaylyn Munro and Brian Boyce; Katrina Jongman-Sereno, daughter of Allard Jongman; and Elizabeth Johnson, daughter of Carey and Jean Johnson.

Francis Denton, Lawrence, will be celebrating his 96th birthday Wednesday. Denton is a retired distributor for Standard Oil. He is an avid golfer. He has three daughters: Joanne Finley, Rising Sun, Md.; Judy Tudor, Steamboat Springs, Colo.; and Cindy Denton, Lawrence.

Sonya Schinkel, Lawrence, and Amy Harris, Ozawkie, have been inducted into the Delta chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International at the Kansas University School of Nursing.

Several area students recently completed Level 3 of the Future Astronaut Training Program at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson. The weeklong camp included a trip to Houston to tour NASA’s Johnson Space Center.

Those who attended were Sheila Zook, daughter of Collista Zook; Kate Rowden, daughter of Deb and Ray Rowden; Ellie Lloyd, daughter of Dicksie Lloyd; and Tori Tunget, daughter of Jim and Theresa Tunget.

Allen Lankford, Lawrence, presented a research project at William Jewell College’s David Nelson Duke Undergraduate Colloquium. Lankford, son of Wayland and Patsy Lankford, recently graduated from William Jewell with a degree in accounting.

Ethan McDonald, Lawrence, made the Dean’s List for the spring 2002 semester at Ithaca College, Ithaca, N.Y. He is a Free State High School graduate.

Susie Warden, a freshman at Bishop Seabury Academy, recently has been named by the American Classical League as a winner of the third annual Julie K. Petrino Memorial Book Award. The award recognizes students who show particular dedication to the study of classical mythology. Students qualify for nomination based on their performances on the National Mythology Exam and their clear and compelling love of classical studies.

Bishop Seabury Academy announces recipients of special recognition for being on the Honor Roll for three quarters of the 2001-2002 school year. The recipients:

Caroline Nobo, Lawrence, recently attended the American Legion Auxiliary’s 56th session of Girls Nation in Washington D.C. Nobo, a Free State High School senior, met President Bush and participated in the government education program. Nobo is the daughter of Joe and Missy Nobo.

The Alford Clark Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 852 and its auxiliary announces that Nancy Landis, an Oskaloosa grade school teacher, will receive the National Citizenship Education Teacher of the Year Award. She will be given the award at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 18 at the VFW Post, 138 Ala. The award recognizes teachers who promote civic responsibility, flag etiquette and patriotism.

Landis received first place in District II of the Department of Kansas VFW.
