Help needed for 10K run

Volunteers are being sought to assist with the inaugural 10K Crosstown Unity Run.

About 100 volunteers are needed for the Aug. 17 event, which is a benefit for the Lawrence High School and Free State High School cross country and track programs.

Organizers are planning a 10K that starts on the track at Free State, winds through the Kansas University campus and finishes at the LHS track. That race begins 8 a.m. Bus transportation is available from LHS to the starting line.

The 1-mile walk/run will be at 9:30 a.m.

Entry fee is $18 for the 10K, and $10 for the mile event.

Baker University appoints new trustees to board

Baldwin Baker University President Daniel M. Lambert announced the appointment of Gwendolyn Grant, Kansas City, Mo.; Ivabelle S. Hey, Baldwin; and George R. Schrader, Dallas; to the University’s Board of Trustees.

Grant is president and CEO of the Urban League of Greater Kansas City and active in many civic and professional organizations.

Hey has worked in Baldwin in several positions, including P.E.O., the library board, Sunday school teacher at First United Methodist Church, and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Schrader is the president of Schrader & Cline, L.L.C. and owner of Schrader Investment Company. He is also a trustee of Menninger Clinic and on the board of directors of the Methodist Hospitals of Dallas.

Foundation gives away trees

The national Arbor Day Foundation will give away 10 trees to each person who becomes a member during August as part of the nonprofit group’s Trees for America campaign.

The trees are Colorado blue spruce and will be shipped with instructions during its planting season between Oct. 15 and Dec. 12. The 6- to 12-inch trees are guaranteed to grow, or will be replaced free of charge.

Annual Kansas State picnic greets prospective students

The Lawrence area K-State Alumni Club and K-State Alumni Assn., are sponsoring a picnic at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 20 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds.

The picnic will feature several guest speakers from Kansas State University and activities for children. Guests are asked to bring a dessert and individual table service.

High school juniors and seniors are admitted free and will receive a free KSU T-shirt. There will be a scholarship drawing for high school seniors planning to attend KSU this fall.
