Ex-Jayhawk Advances: Former Kansas University golfer Travis Hurst has qualified for the U.S. Amateur on Aug. 19-25 at Bloomfield Hills, Mich. Hurst shot 72-66138 in last week’s qualifier at Wichita Terradyne.

Spray Bike Champ: Lawrence’s Larry Spray won the men’s ages 50 and over division of the Midwest Fat Tire bicycling series last Sunday in Warrensburg, Mo. Lawrence’s Jennifer Tilley was second in the expert women class.

Ladyhawks Clinic: Lawrence Ladyhawks basketball clinic for seventh and eighth grade girls is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Aug. 17 at the East Lawrence Center. An AAU U-13 team will be drafted from the clinic. For information, call Keke Blackmon at 841-6848 or Anthony Lyles at 843-3622.

FSHS Parent Meeting: Free State High will hold its fall sports meeting for parents at 5 p.m. on Aug. 18 in the school auditorium. Parents of students participating in fall sports are encouraged to attend.

Phenix Fyler Goes 3-3: Lawrence U-12 Phenix-Fyler won three games and lost three at the ASA West Nationals in St. Louis. Fyler finished the season with a 43-23 record. Team members are Molly Fyler, Julianne George, Cally Gray, Kelsey Harrison, Kristin Karlin, Cassie Potter, Sydney Seratte, Michelle Smith, Hannah Somers, Dequesne Sprow, Jordan Van Houtan, LaDonna Weien and Amanda Weishaar.

CSP Program: Clinton State Park naturalist Bruce Wolhuter will conduct a hands-on educational program entitled “Skins and Skulls” at 8 p.m. Sautrday at Campground 3, Shelter House 6. For information, call 842-8562.

Softball Tourney: First Church of the Nazarene will conduct a men’s softball tournament on Sept. 7. Cost is $110. For information, call Howard Born at 979-3234.

Flames Burn Bright: Sport2Sport Flames fifth grade basketball advanced to the final round of the Elite National MAYB Tournament last weekend in Hutchinson before bowing to a sixth grade team in the final round. The Flames were also third in the Sunflower State Games. Team members are Taylor Bird, Tracie Weege, Whitney Schwab, Cassie Potter, Bailey Scott, Lexi Smith, Emily Huerter, Alex Zordel, Maggie Hull and Rosie Hull.

Crosstown Unity Run: Lawrence and Free State high cross country teams will be the beneficiaries of the Crosstown Unity 10K and mile fun run on Aug. 17. The 10K will start at Free State and end at Lawrence High. For information, go to www.freestaterunning.com or call Steve Riley at 842-4351.

Five-Tool Baseball: Applications for this fall’s Five-Tool Baseball School at Free State High will be accepted through next Wednesday. Grade school and junior high sessions will be on Saturdays and high school sessions on Sundays. For information, call Mike Hill at 749-1334.

U-12 Softball: Tryouts for a U-12 girls softball team are scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at the Perry-Lecompton High baseball field. The team will play in the Lake Shawnee League. For information, call (785) 863-4136.

Holcom Fall Ball: Anyone who participated in Holcom Baseball Assn. games this summer and is interested in fall baseball, call Brent Urban at 830-0626. Registration deadline is next Wednesday. Urban is also looking for coaches for the Houk-Ice and Holcom leagues for next summer. Applications are available at the Holcom Rec Center.

JGC Winner: Ben Overman shot a 73 and won last Sunday’s Jayhawk Golf Club tournament at Alvamar. Chris Anderson was runner-up with a 75. Next were Randy Conroy and Chad Roesler, both with 78s. In net scoring, Jim Sandage was low with a 68, following by Ted Johnson 69 and Curt Anderson and Don Schulenberg, both 71.

Phenix Trials: Lawrence Phenix girls softball will conduct 2003 season tryouts on Aug. 18 at the Haskell Indian Nations University diamond. Age-group trials will start at 1 p.m. with the U-10 division. For information, call Rodney Gilges at (785) 594-2371 or John Hamilton at 542-2860.

Eagle Bend Champ: Mike Martinez recorded a low net of 29 to win Tuesday’s Eagle Bend Men’s League golf tournament. Don Dilley had a 30 and Steve Huffman a 31. Rick Caldwell notched a 33 for the low gross score.

Baldwin Team Shines: The Baldwin White Sox compiled a 16-5 record en route to the U-14 Houk-Ice League regular season and tournament titles. Team members are Dale Baker, Cody Nelson, Jesse Green, Wesley Callahan, Adam Deere, Cory Lauridsen, Brian Harris, Travis Barnes, Richard Wilkes, Andrew Madl, Aaron Mills, Matt Labuda and Matt Kretschmeyer. Coaches are Mike Deere, Dennis Mills and Charles Barnes.
