Delta adding Dallas flights to KCI

Delta Connection, the regional service of Delta Air Lines, will add flights between Kansas City and Dallas in October.

Delta Connection is the second company to add jet service at Kansas City International Airport since the shutdown and bankruptcy of Vanguard Airlines last week. Immediately after Vanguard stopped service, AirTran Airways announced that it would add three flights to Atlanta in October.

Beginning Oct. 1 through SkyWest Airlines, Delta Connection will offer six departures daily from KCI to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. Departure times range from 7:30 a.m. to 9:15 p.m.

Fred Buttrell, Delta Connection’s president and chief executive officer, said the new flights will give Kansas City customers access to a fourth Delta hub, in addition to Atlanta, Cincinnati and Salt Lake City.

The regional jets used by SkyWest have 50 seats, said Tara Smith, air service development manager for the Kansas City Aviation Department.

The new services offered by Delta Connection and AirTran are to cities where Vanguard flew nonstop.

In another development, Sunworld International Airlines has pulled out of the Kansas City market after a brief stay. Sunworld discontinued its two daily KCI flights to Indianapolis on July 22, Smith said.

Sunworld, based in Fort Mitchell, Ky., decided to concentrate on its better-known charter service, according to Smith. Sunworld began operating flights between Kansas City and Indianapolis in May.
