Son of former Baldwin police chief sentenced

Shawn Butell, the son of the former Baldwin Police Chief, was ordered Tuesday to spend a year under intensive supervision for convictions of burglary and misdemeanor theft.

Douglas County Judge Robert Fairchild also ordered Butell, 23, to spend two weekends in the Douglas County Jail as part of his sentence.

The intensive supervision will be handled by Douglas County Community Corrections. The program is more stringent than standard probation. A one-year prison and a one-year jail sentence were suspended.

Butell pleaded no contest last month to the charges. He was charged earlier this year with burglarizing Baldwin Feed Co. and stealing from Heritage Tractor, also of Baldwin.

Butell is the son of Steve Butell, former long-time Baldwin Police chief. Steve Butell resigned from the position last month.
