Moving help

To the editor:

Headquarters Counseling Center has just moved to our new location in Suite C of the Charlton Manley building at 211 E. Eighth St. We are very proud of the fact that we have never closed since opening in December 1969. Although this move was a huge project, it was accomplished without any break in our services.

How was this possible? Thanks to the efforts of many people from this community.

Much of the work was accomplished by folks who are past or current members of: our board of directors, our volunteer counseling staff and our paid staff. Members of various faith communities, members of the Chamber of Commerce Envoy Committee, young women and men from Van Go Mobile Arts and Bert Nash’s YESS (Youth Employment Support Services) Program, and other community members also volunteered their help. These efforts spanned days with a yard sale, moving items to our new location and cleaning.

For example, on a steamy Saturday, 16 people worked with great enthusiasm carrying furniture and boxes from our three-story former home to our new one-level suite. One of these was a man who had been walking his dog when he saw all the activity, so he jumped in and helped carry some of the heavier pieces.

One of the rewards of living and working in Lawrence is this spirit of helpfulness and community that has been demonstrated throughout our moving process. Thanks for all your help. And please feel welcome to drop by and see our new home for our counseling, information, and children’s safety programs.
