County receives money for waste programs

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment will distribute $1.55 million in grants to 38 cities and counties for recycling, composting and solid waste source reduction programs.

Lawrence will receive $54,000 for a new horizontal baler for an existing recycling program. The Northeast Kansas Education Service Center, in Lecompton, will receive $20,000 to help an existing environmental classroom for the John Dewey Academy at Lake Perry.

“These grants will improve services in Kansas’ communities and rural areas while conserving important resources,” KDHE Secretary Clyde Graeber said.

The grants are funded through a $1 per-ton fee on solid waste entering Kansas landfills, which generates $4.9 million each year.
