Fariba Pouraryan, Lawrence, has been appointed deputy assistant secretary of state in business services for the Kansas Secretary of State’s office. She has worked as corporation deputy since January 1998. Pouraryan will oversee business entities, uniform commercial code and a new customer service center called business services.

U.S. Bank recently named Steven Howland vice president of commercial lending. Howland comes to Lawrence from Chillicothe, Mo., where he worked as a commercial loan officer.

Howland has 10 years of banking experience. His office will be at 900 Mass.

Frank Norman, Lawrence, attended The School of Natural Healing’s Master Herbalist Certification seminar June 24-29 in Springville, Utah. He passed the certification test and is now a master herbalist.

He plans on conducting lectures on herbs and natural healing and tutorials with individuals interested in learning more about these subjects. Norman is a botanist/wetland ecologist for a Lawrence engineering firm.

Susan Schneweis, Lawrence, has been promoted to vice president of Wichita-based Hartsook Essential Services, a fund-raising consulting firm. She has a background in campaign counsel and nonprofit management. She serves as resident counsel on a $4 million campaign for The Children’s SPOT at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. She is the lead counsel on campaigns for Animal Haven and the Community Blood Center of Greater Kansas City.

Schneweis recently was appointed by Gov. Bill Graves to her second term on the Kansas Board of Dental Examiners, where she serves as secretary.

Lawrence resident Fran Gale, an architectural conservator, was a guest instructor in the University of Southern California’s 2002 Summer Program in Historic Preservation.

She helped teach a 15-day general introduction to historic preservation. The course is designed for architects, community leaders, civic planners and graduate students.

Gale is technical director at Lawrence-based Prosoco, a manufacturer of products for cleaning, protecting and maintaining concrete, brick and stone. She is a frequent consultant on restoration and preservation projects nationwide, including several historic buildings in Lawrence. Spooner Hall on the Kansas University campus was among the examples of Gale’s work that she shared with the students. She also showed images of the former Carnegie Library at Ninth and Vermont streets in Lawrence.

This is the sixth year that USC has invited Gale to teach in the program.

Courtney Williams, Lawrence, has joined Lawrence-based Prosoco as a technical analyst in the company’s Laboratory Department.

Williams is a 1994 graduate of Tonganoxie High School. She earned a bachelor of science degree in marine science from Texas A&M University in 1998. She previously served as a product management assistant for Maupintour, LLC in Lawrence.

As a technical analyst, Williams tests samples of brick and block for various masonry manufacturers. The manufacturers use her test results to issue recommendations to builders on the best way to clean and protect the masonry after it is used in buildings.

Bill and Kathi Fair of Bill Fair and Company Inc., Lecompton, attended the National Auctioneers conference in July in Orlando, Fla. Bill Fair presented a seminar on target marketing. More than 1,600 auctioneers attended the conference.

Tiffany Corle, occupational therapist with Lawrence Therapy Services and Baldwin Therapy Services, recently attended the course “Arthritis and Osteoporosis Care: A Hands on Approach” in Kansas City, Mo. The course focused on new treatment options for arthritis and osteoporosis.

Michael Wallace, president of Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, announced that the Lawrence-based association’s membership reached a record 22,000. Since January 1999, GCSAA membership has grown 58 percent.

AFLAC has promoted Mary Ann Mosier, Lawrence, to district sales coordinator. Mosier and her sales team focus on voluntary employee benefits for local businesses and work forces. Kellie Cowan and Gerry Meyer, both of Lawrence, have joined AFLAC as agents.

Honors and awards

John Oberzan, a registered representative with Robert W. Baird & Co. Inc. in Lawrence, has earned Planco’s highest honor. The honor is membership in the 2002 Captain’s Club. Planco, a wholesaler of investment and insurance products, distinguishes those representatives who produce more than $1 million in sales with Captain’s Club membership.

Oberzan has assisted clients with their investment and retirement planning by matching their needs with corresponding investment products offered by The Hartford, an international insurance and financial service operation.

The Tulsa (Okla.) District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has named Guy Green, formerly of Lawrence, the Professional Engineer of the Year. The award recognizes an outstanding professional engineer who has demonstrated noteworthy performance and significant career development. Green is a supervisory civil engineer with the Tulsa District’s Hazardous, Toxic and Radiological Waste Design Center in the Air Force/Support for Others Section.

Green recently was selected to serve as a member of the board of visitors for the college of Engineering at Kansas University. He will provide advice to the college on engineering curriculum, faculty and facilities.

Crittenden GolfInc. magazine has chosen Steve Mona, CEO of the Lawrence-based Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, as one of the “Most Powerful People in Golf.” The magazine’s “most powerful” are individuals who have the ability to influence the development of courses, the marketing of the game, the number of golfers playing the game or revenues generated at courses. Mona is a member of the First Tee Advisory Committee, the World Golf Hall of Fame Selection Committee, the National Golf Foundation Board of Directors, the National Minority Golf Foundation Board of Directors and the National Golf Course Owners Association Advisory Committee.

Others listed in the August 2002 edition include: Tiger Woods, professional golfer; Tim Finchem, PGA Tour commissioner; and Ron Drapeau, Callaway Golf CEO.

Blam, a Lawrence advertising and design agency, recently received a national winner and runner-up award at the annual Silver Microphone competition. The competition recognizes the nation’s best local and regional radio commercials, audio programs and Web sites.

Blam’s winning radio commercials were produced by Capitol Federal Savings. Blam president and creative director Doug Stremel was the producer/director for the winning commercials.

Coming events

Consumer Credit Counseling Services will present “Discover More Dollars” from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the United Way Building, 2518 Ridge Court. The workshop will cover financial goal setting, developing a budget, cutting costs, evaluating spending habits and starting a savings plan.
