Renegades split pair at Triple Crown

? For jumping up an age slot, the Lawrence Renegades held their own Friday at the U-18 Triple Crown World Series, splitting a pair of games.

The Renegades, primarily a team of 16- and 17-year-olds, opened the 18-under tournament by beating the Tomball (Texas) Crusaders, 3-0, but dropped their second game, 19-2, to the Augusta (Kan.) Cubs.

Seth Johnson pitched a complete game, two-hit shutout against the Crusaders, striking out eight batters for his seventh win of the summer. Cal Heinrich smacked a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Augusta presented a much bigger problem.

The Cubs scored 10 runs in the first inning, taking advantage of five Renegade errors. Augusta pitcher Jason Maier baffled Lawrence’s lineup, limiting the Renegades to just two hits.

Lawrence, 28-15 overall, plays the Utah Baseball Academy, from Hillcrest, Utah, at 11:30 this morning.
