Victim crushed by crane

A man was crushed to death under the boom of a construction crane Thursday morning.

The name of the victim has not been released.

The crane belongs to King Construction Co. of Hesston, which had been working to repair the U.S. Highway 56 bridge at its intersection with Kansas Highway 99 in Admire, where the accident happened.

No information has been released on how the crane fell.

The body was discovered about 10:45 a.m.

Body found at lake

Army Corps of Engineers rescue crews discovered a body believed to belong to a Coffey County man who disappeared in Melvern Lake, authorities said.

Osage County Sheriff Ken Lippert said rescue workers had found the body washed up on shore Wednesday. They think it is that of Augustine Hernandez, 22, who was seen boating in the area July 21.

The body was taken to the Shawnee County Coroner’s Office for an autopsy.

Church bookkeeper charged with fraud

A Mission woman has been charged with mail fraud in connection with a scheme at a church where she worked as a bookkeeper.

Kathleen K. Creach, 35, was charged July 24 with 61 counts of mail fraud, said U.S. Atty. Eric Melgren.

Creach is accused of taking more than $120,000 from St. Pius X Church between September 1999 and March 2001.

Creach faces up to five years in prison.
