Vormehr Scores Twice: Katy Vormehr, a Free State High graduate, scored two goals  one unassisted  and assisted on another goal as Kansas blanked Missouri, 4-0, in a high school all-star soccer game last Saturday at Arrowhead Stadium. Morgan Matthews, another former Firebird, also participated. Vormehr will attend Moorhead (Minn.) State; Matthews is headed to Fort Lewis (Colo.) State.

Brk, McGovern Take Pair: Lawrence’s Nick McGovern and Ian Brk each won two freestyle matches before being eliminated from contention at the Cadet-Junior National Wrestling Championships last week in Fargo, N.D. Lawrence’s Justin Stevens won one match as did Joe Bonner of Baldwin and Chad Schmale of Santa Fe Trail. SFT grad Brooke Bogren finished fourth in the 128-pound women’s division and earned All-America honors. Brk earned similar honors in the Greco-Roman division earlier last week.

Huckfeldt Low: Ron Huckfeldt fired a 74 and won last Sunday’s Jayhawk Golf Club tournament at Alvamar. Kent Beisner and Van Reichert both recorded 75s and Jay Patterson had a 76. In gross play, Curt Anderson was low with a 68. Jeff Miller was runner-up with a 70. Tom Dennis and Larry Whiteley each had 72s.

New Soccer Program: Soccer Hobbits, a new Kaw Valley Soccer Association program for four-year-olds will launch this fall. It’s a parent-child program on Saturdays. Registration is required, but there is no deadline. For information, call 749-5872.

Touring Baseballer: Tyler Trowbridge, a Baldwin High graduate, is playing infield for a USA Athletes International baseball team making a tour of Europe that will conclude next week. Trowbridge has signed a letter of intent with Highland Community College.

Boeck Runner-Up: Dee Boeck of Lawrence finished second in the women’s ages 50-54 division of the Cancer Action 5K last Sunday in Kansas City, Kan. Her time was 23:47.

Robertson Honored: Connie Robertson of Lecompton will be inducted into the Kansas Tennis Coaches Hall of Fame on Aug. 8 in Topeka. Robertson is a former coach and administrator at Topeka Hayden High. She currently serves as USA Tennis coordinator for Kansas.

Soccer lovers: Women who play soccer or who would like to learn how, are invited to join a free, weekly pickup game at Broken Arrow Park. Five-Tool Baseball: Applications are being accepted for the Five-Tool Baseball School, being held the weekends of Aug. 17 though Oct. 5. The grade school camp will run 9-11:30 a.m. on Saturdays, the junior high camp 9 a.m.-noon on Saturdays and the high school camp 1-4 p.m. on Sundays. For information, call Mike Hill at 749-1334.
