Burglaries and thefts reportedt

About 12:20 a.m. Wednesday, someone entered an unlocked door to an apartment in the 2600 block of West Sixth Street and took some purses and wallets. Four women, all age 22, who were staying in the apartment called Lawrence Police from a bedroom. One of the women said she saw a man’s arm reach through the front door after it was opened. Losses were listed at $1,295. The man was gone when police arrived, and no arrests have been made.

Someone entered a model mobile home at Kaw Valley Homes, 1330 N. Third St., sometime Sunday or Monday and took a 43-inch television set, a DVD player and stereo speakers, Lawrence Police said. Losses were listed at $2,100. Police said they were not sure how entry to the mobile home was made.

A Gilbert, Ariz., man staying at the Baymont Inn, 740 Iowa, reported Tuesday someone had broken into his Dodge Stratus. The driver’s side window had been damaged. A 40-year-old, custom lever action rifle was taken from the trunk of the car, police were told. The report didn’t say how entry was gained to the trunk. Damage and losses were listed at $3,200.

A 62-year-old Lawrence man told police Monday someone broke into his 1986 Chevrolet van while it was parked in the 1600 block of Harper Street. A door and mirror were damaged. Taken were a compact disc, stereo radio and speakers. Damage and losses were listed at $1,190.

Fires

A diesel engine used to power a boring machine caught fire Wednesday morning, causing $5,000 damage to the equipment owned by J.W. Contractors of Lawrence, Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical Battalion Chief Doug Green said. The machinery caught fire for an unknown reason about 9:53 a.m. at a vacant residential lot under development near the intersection of Bobwhite Drive and Cog Hill Court, Green said. Crews were using the machine to run underground electrical lines. Diesel and hydraulic fuel burned, but no hazardous materials response was required, Green said.

Condition reports

D. Morgan Swiler, 32, Lansing, was released Wednesday from KU Med, Kansas City, Kan. He was taken there Monday after being thrown from his motorcycle in Tonganoxie.
