Harden on to Coffeyville

Damian Harden, a Free State High graduate, signed a letter-of-intent to run cross country and track and field at Coffeyville Community College this fall. Harden was a versatile four-year runner for the Firebird track squad, running the 100, 200, 400 and 800.

DCABA U-8 All-Stars second at national meet

Liberty, Mo. Â North Kansas City ‘Canes pushed across a run in the bottom of the eighth inning and spilled the Lawrence DCABA All-Stars, 10-9, to win the U-8 Hap Dumont World Series on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, the ‘Canes, who were in the losers bracket, had defeated the All-Stars, 9-2, to force a decisive second game.

Anthony Buffalomeat had four hits for the All-Stars, including a two-run homer. K.J. Pritchard also homered for the Lawrence team that compiled a 17-3 record.

Bike race called off

The Grand Prix of Lawrence, a downtown bike race that originally had been scheduled for Aug. 18, has been called off. Organizer Jim Whittaker, of Alta-Sport LC, cited poor economic conditions and an inability to lure top regional cyclists to the event as reasons for canceling the event and said he’d try to stage the event next year.
