Suspect arrested for allegedly shoplifting

A man who allegedly tried to leave SuperTarget, 3201 Iowa, without paying for nearly $200 worth of groceries was stopped Tuesday night by store employees, Lawrence Police said.

Police were called shortly before 6 p.m. A security guard said he had watched the 23-year-old suspect push the cart of groceries past cashiers and into the parking lot. The guard and another employee approached the suspect, and a struggle ensued, police said.

The suspect was detained until police arrived to arrest him. One of the store employees suffered a cut to his arm in the struggle, but otherwise no one was hurt, police said.

The man was taken to the Douglas County Jail, and charges were pending Wednesday.

KU researcher to discuss icebergs on NPR program

A Kansas University researcher today will be one of two guests on a National Public Radio show discussing the icebergs of Antarctica.

Prasad Gogineni, professor of electrical engineering and computer science, has conducted research on the melting of ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica.

The hourlong “Public Interest” show, which begins at noon and can be heard on KCUR 89.3 FM, also will feature Julie Palais, project manager of the Antarctic glaciology program with the National Science Foundation Office of Polar Programs.

Palais and Gogineni are working together on the Polar Radar for Ice Sheet Measurements (PRISM) project, which will measure ice thickness and determine bedrock conditions in Greenland and Antarctica. The project will use mobile radar sensors in the polar regions to collect and analyze data about interactions between ice sheets, oceans and the atmosphere.
