Spencer, Lions claim Sunflower League titles

? Lawrence High’s boys golf team hit the daily double on Monday.

Sophomore Nathaniel Spencer paced three LHS medalists by winning the individual championship and the Lions successfully defended their team title at the Sunflower League golf tournament at Brookridge Country Club.

“We’re real pleased with that,” LHS coach Ron Commons said of the back-to-back championships. “It’s always nice to win it at another site, especially this course. None of our people had played it before so we went in there pretty blind and cold. For us to play that well against some of the other schools who have practiced there was really good. We hope we can take it farther in our season.”

The Lions needed 306 strokes as a team to traverse the par-72 course. Olathe East finished second with 309 and Shawnee Mission Northwest was third at 317. Free State placed 10th with 351 strokes. The Firebirds’ lowest previous finish in their five-year history was fifth.

“We didn’t bring our A-game today,” FSHS coach Jack Schreiner said. “I really thought after the last tournament at Alvamar we were really making strides, but now we’re kind of going backward, it seems. Hopefully, we’ve still got time and we can do better before regionals.”

There’s not much more Spencer and the Lions can improve on. The LHS sophomore, who finished second at league last year, shot an even-par 72. He suffered a double-bogey on the 12th hole to go 2-over, but rallied for two birdies down the stretch.

“He was real pleased,” Commons said of Spencer. “A year ago he was the second medalist and then to come back and win he’s played real well all year long. We want him to stay right there.”

LHS senior Spencer Wilson lost in a playoff, but finished fourth at 76. Fellow senior Camron Flanders won in a playoff to place fifth with a 77. Other LHS participants were Zach Blevins (81), Scott Andrews (83) and Thomas Fulbright (85).

“Today in particular was probably our best day,” Commons said. “We did this a year ago and didn’t finish as strong. We realize we have our work cut out for us.”

Free State was led by freshman Jason O’Bryon’s 85, followed by Aaron Webber (89), Stephen Skepnek (93), Matt Baker (94) and Andy Frye (97).
