City Prep Roundup: LHS baseball spanks Lancers, 12-5

? Lawrence High scored 10 runs in the first three innings and rolled to a 12-5 baseball rout of Shawnee Mission East on Monday at the Johnson County 3&2 Complex.

“They were 1-12 coming in, so it’s a game that we should win,” LHS coach David Petry said. “I was real happy with the way we hit the ball. It’s been a long while since we had double figures in hits and runs. That’s encouraging to see. That’s been a point of emphasis in practice. It’s good to see them break out.”

Derek Bailey and Mike Morrell each had three hits for the Sunflower League-leading Lions (10-5 overall, 7-1 league). Bailey had a triple and a homer and three RBIs, while Morrell had two doubles and four RBIs.

“They were ready to play today,” Petry said. “I think some of that had to do with the fact that we had a game rained out Saturday and we hadn’t played since last Tuesday. They were anxious to get back on the field and play somebody.”

The Lions, winners of five straight, added a game to their schedule after the makeup of the city showdown with Free State was moved back a day. FSHS will play host to Emporia at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Free State. LHS will face Emporia around 7 p.m. Wednesday at Ice Field.

The LHS-FSHS game, postponed by rain from Saturday, will be made up at 7 p.m. Thursday at Free State.

FSHS soccer rolls

Leavenworth Katy Vormehr and Mary Bernhardt each scored two goals as Free State hammered Leavenworth, 8-0, in soccer Monday at the Leavenworth pitch.

“We pretty much took control of the game at the beginning,” FSHS coach Jason Pendleton said. “The girls were ready to play, and they came out and took care of business like they should have. It’s always a positive when kids are having success finding the back of the net.

“Hopefully it will carry over into the final few weeks of the season.”

The Firebirds (4-7-1) led, 5-0, at the half.

Stephanie Miller and Natalie Wilkins each had a goal and an assist; Jessica Heck and Meredith Mayo each scored a goal; Michelle Garcia had two assists; and Vormehr added an assist.

FSHS will play host to KC Harmon on Wednesday.

Free State tennis fourth

Topeka Free State’s boys tennis team placed fourth at the eight-team Topeka High Invitational on Monday.

The No. 1 doubles team of Ben Cropp and Matt Schwabauer went 2-2 and placed second; Nick Potter and Drew Smith went 2-2 and placed fourth at No. 2 doubles; Mark Whittemore went 1-3 and took sixth at No. 2 singles; and Bryan Maygers was 0-4 and placed eighth at No. 1 singles.

Maize won the tournament with 26 points; FSHS was fourth with 13 points.
