Bicyclist injured in traffic accident

A man riding a bicycle at the intersection of Fourth and Florida streets was injured Monday afternoon when he was struck by a car.

Lawrence Police and Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical were called to the scene shortly after 4 p.m. The victim was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital by ambulance.

Police were still at the scene investigating and no other details were available at 5 p.m.

Michael Howard, Lawrence, said there should be a traffic light at the busy intersection because too many motorists traveling east and west on Fourth drive too fast. There are stop signs for those traveling north and south on Florida.

Howard, whose girlfriend works as a caregiver at a nearby Cottonwood Inc. apartment building, said mentally handicapped residents there often cross the street.

“They cross this intersection all the time on their way to the convenience store,” Howard said. “It’s pretty dangerous.”
