Rain doesn’t hinder ROTC Best Ranger Competition

It rained and rained and rained.

But for 150 Army ROTC cadets from 21 universities across the Midwest, Saturday’s showers were just “good Army weather.”

The cadets convened in Lawrence for Kansas University’s Best Ranger Buddy Team Competition, a strenuous series of events based on the U.S. Army’s annual Best Ranger competition at Fort Benning, Ga.

Beginning at 6 a.m., about 70 two-person teams competed against one another in a 10-kilometer run, 500-meter swim, rock wall climb, weapons assembly and disassembly, and combat run that took them across terrain at Clinton Lake and KU’s West Campus.

Teams came from universities from North Dakota to Oklahoma and Colorado to Illinois, said Lt. Col. Brian DeToy, KU professor of military science.

The foul weather, he said, was good for the cadets.

“They learned that they can persevere and that the Army doesn’t stop because of the weather,” he said.

Accident: Five injured in car wreck

Five Johnson County teen-agers were injured in a one-car accident Friday night in Franklin County.

The accident occurred at 11:50 p.m. on Kansas Highway 33, about four miles south of Wellsville, the Kansas Highway Patrol reported. A 1998 Chevrolet driven by Natalie R. Steutermann, 17, Olathe, left the road, entered the east ditch, struck the side of a driveway, flipped over and came to rest on its wheels.

Steutermann; Lynsey J. Beck, 17, Olathe; Scaitlin J. Warhurst, 17, Lenexa; and Lynsey A. Proctor, 16, Lenexa, were transported to Ransom Memorial Hospital in Ottawa, where they were treated and released. Another passenger, Diana C. Layton, 17, Olathe, was taken to Ransom Memorial and then Shawnee Mission Medical Center, where she was in fair condition Saturday.

Everyone in the car was wearing a seat belt.

Sports: Golf tournament to benefit KU’s School of Education

A golf tournament Friday at Alvamar Public Golf Course will raise money for scholarships at the Kansas University School of Education.

Registration for the ninth-annual Gale Sayers Benefit Golf Tournament, which begins at 1 p.m., is $160 for a single player or $800 for a five-player team. Holes can be sponsored for $500, and a five-player team can be sponsored for $1,000. Donations are tax-deductible.

Sayers, KU’s All-American tailback from the 1960s who played for the Chicago Bears, will attend the event. To register, call 864-9610.

On the hill: KU chancellor to address law enforcement meeting

Kansas University Chancellor Robert Hemenway will give welcoming remarks to a regional meeting of the International Campus Law Enforcement Administrators at 8:30 a.m. Monday at the Big 12 room in the Kansas Union.

The meeting will include campus law enforcement officials from 13 midwestern states, said Lynn Bretz, director of university relations.

“They’re going to be talking about a variety of issues regarding law enforcement,” she said.
