Ted and Shirley Coulter will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a family gathering May 5.

Ted Coulter and Shirley Steinle were married April 25, 1952, in the Wilson Methodist Church, Wilson.

Their teaching careers have taken them to several Kansas communities and schools. Both of them taught in the Stockton and Lyons public schools.

Ted also taught at Milan High School in the Hutchinson public schools and at Dodge City Community College before moving in 1971 to Lawrence to teach at Haskell Indian Junior College. During Ted’s tenure at Haskell, he was an instructor of reading and worked as a reading consultant on several American Indian reservations throughout the western United States.

Shirley also taught at Centerview School in Russell County, Nickerson Grade School and South Hutchinson Grade School. In Lawrence she taught at Trinity Lutheran Preschool and later at Haskell Indian Junior College, now known as Haskell Indian Nations University.

They retired as instructors from the university. Ted retired in 1991, and Shirley retired in 1996. Since his retirement, Ted has been a substitute teacher in several area schools near Lawrence.

The couple have three children: Marvin Coulter, Pauline Coulter; Sylve Coulter, Topeka; and Jill Hutchinson, Eudora. They also have eight grandchildren.

Their family suggests a card shower for the couple. Cards may be sent to 2932 Chisholm Drive, Lawrence 66047.
