Baker Wetlands Field Day will be held Sunday

Canoe trips through the Baker Wetlands will be available to the public from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday as part of the 11th annual Baker Wetlands Field Day.

Located south of 31st Street between Haskell Avenue and Louisiana Street, the 573-acre wetlands are home to nearly 250 species of birds, 400 plant species and 85 different invertebrates.

The public is asked to enter the north gate; exit the east gate. In between, there will be several exhibits celebrating the wetlands’ diversity, including living displays featuring birds, turtles, frogs, and salamanders.

Other exhibits will share information on the proposed South Lawrence Trafficway, the wetlands’ role in reducing flood damage, and how scientists monitor the area’s water table. Canoe rides will be available.

For those who choose to park their cars and walk, a shuttle will be available from the east gate back to the north gate. Bicycles are permitted.

Baker Wetlands Field Day is a project of Jayhawk Audubon Society, the biology department at Baker University and the student-run environmental group Earth We Are.

Missing person: Authorities seek teen-ager believed to be runaway

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public’s help in locating a Winchester teen-ager they think has run away from home.

No foul play is suspected, Deputy Dana Boyer said.

The boy is Clinton McConnell, 14. He was last seen about 7:30 a.m. April 9, Boyer said. The boy is known as a “chronic runaway” but usually is found or returns after a short period, Boyer said.

McConnell may have traveled to Texas with a 16-year-old Lecompton girl, Boyer said. They might be in a silver-and-blue 1984 Pontiac Firebird with a Douglas County license tag.

McConnell is 5 feet, 7 inches tall and weighs 130 pounds. He has blue eyes and short-cut blond hair.
