Faces and places

Andy Stewart has joined Charlton Manley Insurance as an account executive in the Employee Health Benefits Division. Stewart received a degree in business administration from Kansas University. Charlton Manley provides insurance advice and has offices in Lawrence, Topeka and Kansas City.

Jan Kuyper Erland, developer of The Bridge To Achievement of Mem-ExSpan Inc., has partnered with Innovative Learning Systems Inc. to form a school-business partnership with East Heights and New York schools. Their goals include promoting the importance of parental involvement, family reading and school communication.

Douglas Pickert has joined Landplan Engineering, Lawrence, as senior landscape architect. He has more than 10 years of landscape architectural design experience. His responsibilities include providing lead design and project oversight on planning, parks and recreation, development, streetscape and landscape architectural projects. Pickert’s current projects include final design for the Downtown Merriam revitalization project, final design for a segment of the Riverfront Heritage Trail in Kansas City, and planning and design of the commercial district beautification in Lindsborg.

Deanna Graybeal-Lovato has been promoted to office manager at Jones Seel Huyett, an advertising, marketing and public relations agency in Topeka. Her responsibilities include client services, accounts receivables, job ticket trafficking and media invoicing. She has worked at Jones Seel Huyett for two years. She obtained certified professional secretary status in 1991. Graybeal-Lovato co-owns and operates Custom Iron Works & Designs in Topeka.

David Mattern, a financial consultant with the Lawrence office of AG Edwards & Sons, recently completed a two-day investment seminar in St. Louis. The seminar focused on a variety of investment opportunities available through AG Edwards. It emphasized advanced estate planning and trust services. Mattern has been in the financial services industry for more than 11 years.

Timothy Carr, a senior scientist for the Kansas Geological Survey in Lawrence, will be a featured speaker at Saturday’s annual meeting of the Southwest Kansas Royalty Owners Assn. Carr will provide a demonstration of how to check your royalty and production information on the Internet. The meeting will be in Hugoton.

Children’s Mercy Hospitals & Clinics, Kansas City, Mo., has named Callahan Creek its marketing agency of record. Children’s Mercy Hospitals & Clinics is the Midwest’s leading center for pediatric health care and research encompassing six facilities throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area. Lawrence-based Callahan Creek will work with the hospital’s marketing and community relations staff to develop and integrate marketing communications regionally and nationally.

Terry McDaniel has been named a caregiver specialist at Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging. McDaniel has been the information/outreach specialist during the past three years at the agency. Her new duties include providing assistance to individuals who are the primary caregivers, developing a resource bank, identifying gaps in services, case management and public speaking

Honors and awards

Allen and Madeline Tollefson, Lecompton, received the 2001 Summit Award for A.G. Tollefson & Co. Inc. from Behlen Building Systems of Columbus, Neb. They were recognized for their excellence in the metal building industry and as one of the top five Behlen builders in the United States. The Tollefsons received the award in Las Vegas.

Deborah Heinrich and Ruth Porsch received U.S. Bank’s Pinnacle Award. The award recognizes achievement and rewards employees for outstanding performance. Heinrich is the branch manager at 847 Tenn. Porsch is the district manager for U.S. Bank’s Lawrence market.

Lawrence Orthopaedic Surgery employees Ginger Heere, Brenda Billings and Travis Haas received the top three places in the film competition at the 65th annual conference for the Kansas Society of Radiologic Technologists. Films were judged on quality, technical excellence, patient positioning and darkroom technical excellence. Billings placed first; Haas received second place, and Heere won third place.

Coming events

Clinton Parkway Assembly of God, Lawrence, will host a simulcast seminar for business leaders called the “Maximum Impact Simulcast Becoming a Person of Influence” on Saturday at the church, 3200 Clinton Parkway.

John Maxwell, an international speaker and best-selling author, will be joined on the simulcast broadcast by guest speakers Dennis Waitley and Lou Holtz. The simulcast will be broadcast via satellite and downlinked simultaneously to more than 700 churches across North America.

The cost is $79 per person or $50 each for two or more people. Registration begins at 7 a.m. The seminar will be from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. A $5 luncheon will be offered after the seminar. To register or for more information, call 843-7189.

Northeast Kansas Library System will host its annual Spring Assembly and System meeting on Thursday at the Lawrence Holidome. The keynote speaker will be Lt. Gov. Gary Sherrer.

About 125 librarians, trustees and volunteers will attend the event. During the business meeting, officers will be elected to the executive board, and the system plan and 2003 budget will be discussed. Other speakers include Jasmin Lutz, Lawrence Red Cross and Jenne Laytham, Basehor Community Library.
