Buffalo, N.Y. ? Kansas University’s bowling club was eliminated from the Intercollegiate Bowling Championships after a pair of 4-1 losses on Friday.

KU fell to defending national champion Western Illinois early, then to Michigan State in the loser’s bracket of the 16-team tournament.

“We bowled much better today,” Jayhawks coach Mike Fine said. “We actually bowled very well today. We just plain got outscored. We’re done.”

After the first day of the tournament, the Jayhawks  who came into the tournament ranked eighth nationally in the coaches’ poll  entered the double-elimination, Baker-game-formatted second day in 14th place. Western Illinois was third and MSU was 11th.

“It was an interesting day,” Fine said. “Two No. 1’s were eliminated early. The defending women’s champion, Nebraska, is gone, and No. 1 Wichita State’s men are gone.”

Bowling for the Jayhawks in Buffalo were: Mike Keeler, Ryan Ludwig, Jesse James, Alan Emmons, Jason Elliott and Marc D’Errico.

“We had a pretty good season,” Fine said. “We were eighth in the nation, but it ended this weekend.”
