TCM brims with classic musicals

Debbie Reynolds joins Robert Osborne to introduce a 50th anniversary broadcast of the 1952 musical “Singin’ In the Rain” (7 p.m., Turner Classic Movies) starring Reynolds, Donald O’Connor and Gene Kelly, who performs one of the great dance routines in movie history.

Reynolds shares a few behind-the-scenes secrets about “Singin’ in the Rain,” including the fact that Kelly did not really want her in the movie. He later apologized to her for his less-than-friendly attitude on the set. Reynolds will sit down with Osborne to tape a “Private Screenings” interview special that will air in September, in conjunction with the DVD release of “Singin’ in the Rain.”

Today’s broadcast of “Rain” kicks off an evening of big MGM musicals, including director Vincente Minnelli’s 1953 gem “The Band Wagon” (9 p.m., Turner Classics). Originally released in 3-D in 1953, “Kiss Me Kate” airs at 1 a.m., followed by the Peter Lawford 1947 football feature “Good News” at 3 a.m.

You might not want a burger with your fries after watching “Modern Meat” on “Frontline” (8 p.m., PBS). A good burger used to come from the meat of a single butchered cow. According to this often stomach-turning expose, a single fast-food hamburger might be processed from bits of fat and meat scraps from more than 100 different cows. Modern mechanized meat production has increased productivity and profits, but has also vastly increased the chances of spreading harmful bacteria. Fascinating, but hardly appetizing.
