The Little sisters came up big for Lawrence High swimmers on Tuesday at Knox Natatorium.

Melissa Little, a freshman at Southwest Junior High, and junior Megan Little figured in 140 points to help the Lions win the team title at the five-team meet. LHS won its lone home meet of the season with 430 points and Free State finished second at 361.

Melissa Little won the 200 freestyle (2:01.19) and 500 freestyle (5:20.10). She also teamed with Andrea Hemphill, Sarah Marlow and Julia Szabo to win the 200 medley relay (1:57.89). The sisters teamed with Marlow and Hemphill to dominate the 400 freestyle relay in 3:52.77.

“We kind of race against each other on relays and see who has the better split,” said Megan, who placed third in the 100 butterfly and fourth in the 50 freestyle. “It gets hard competing-wise, but we’re really close at home and do stuff together.”

Both Littles started swimming for the Aquahawks club team as 8-year-olds. Melissa became hooked while watching her older sister.

“I used to have to go to her practices and I was really hot, so I decided I should swim and I started to like it,” Melissa said.

The Littles have been key contributors all season for LHS.

“They’re both very, very positive in practice and help us out in team points,” second-year LHS coach Ryan Adams said. “Both are versatile and swim a whole range of stuff.”

LHS won seven of the 12 events on Tuesday. Free State won the other five.

Lawrence senior Andrea Hemphill won the 50 freestyle (24.92) and 100 freestyle (54.02).

“It’s about what I’ve been doing, so I’m happy with that,” Hemphill, an Iowa signee, said of her 50 time.

Hemphill was one of five LHS seniors recognized before the Lions’ only home event.

“It made our team come together and try harder,” Hemphill said. “Home meets are more fun and exciting.”

LHS senior Sarah Fisher placed first in diving with 153.45 points for her first title of the season.

Firebird winners were freshman Ashley Jackson in the 200 individual medley (2:19.27) and 100 butterfly (1:03.05); Katelin Karlin in the 100 backstroke (1:07.19); and Julie McGinn in the 100 breaststroke (1:18.26). Free State’s 200 freestyle relay team of Jackson, Karlin, Shanna Felts and Kelli Criswell also won, finishing in 1:50.71.

LHS and FSHS will be off until a meet on April 25 at the Indoor Aquatic Center.
