Lena May “Sue” Lemons

Memorial services for Lena May “Sue” Lemons, 95, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Lawrence. Inurnment will be in the memorial garden at Second Baptist Church, Liberty, Mo.

Mrs. Lemons died Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

She was born Oct. 23, 1906, in Highland, the daughter of James and Annie Lewis (Lusk) Henley. She graduated from Sparks High School in 1924.

Mrs. Lemons taught all eight grades at various county schools around Highland, including Martin School and Jeffers School. In 1929, she began school at William Jewell College, Liberty, Mo. She left school because of the Depression, but returned after marriage in 1935 and graduated in 1936.

During World War II while her husband was serving in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific, she taught weekday religious education classes in Kokomo, Ind. She later taught elementary school in Centralia, Ill., for 3 1/2 years. She also taught in Paoli, Pa., for 15 years.

She married L. Carol Lemons on June 19, 1933. He survives of the home.

Other survivors include two sons, Stanley Lemons, Greenville, R.I., and David Lemons, Hamilton, Mont.; a sister, Daisy Campbell, Jefferson City, Mo.; two grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

A son, Dale Lemons, died in 1997.

The family suggests memorials to William Jewell College, 500 College Hill, Liberty, MO 64068.
