FSHS Roundup: Firebirds fall in baseball

? Free State High’s baseball team fell to Leavenworth, 8-3, on Tuesday at the Pioneers’ field.

David Allen went 2-for-2 with an RBI, Cassidy Thompson was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI and David Arndt slugged two doubles in four at bats for the Firebirds (5-4).

“We are inconsistent right now. We showed flashes of being good in all aspects and flashes of being bad in all aspects. We have to work through the inconsistencies now,” FSHS coach Mike Hill said.

“Leavenworth is a good club. They had quality pitching. Defensively they made plays. The credit goes to them.”

FSHS, ranked No. 7 in Class 6A, will meet Grandview (Mo.) in the River City Classic at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Kansas University’s Hoglund Ballpark.

Soccer falls, 6-3

Overland Park  Free State High senior Katy Vormehr tallied two goals in a 6-3 loss to Shawnee Mission West on Tuesday at the Shawnee Mission Complex.

Vormehr scored on a corner kick off a pass from Michelle Garcia and had an unassisted goal. Morgan Matthews provided the other Firebirds’ goal.

Free State (2-4-1) will play host to SM East on Thursday at the FSHS field.

Softball splits

Leavenworth  Free State’s softball team rebounded from a close loss in the opener to claim its first victory of the season in the nightcap.

After losing, 3-2, to Leavenworth High on Tuesday, the Firebirds (1-9) won Game Two, 4-3. Felicia Freeman was the winner for FSHS. Ashley Wagner took the loss in Game One.

O’Neal, doubles duo

Leavenworth  Free State High No. 3 singles player Kyle O’Neal and the No. 2 doubles team of Nick Potter and Drew Smith both went 1-2 to place fourth Tuesday at the Leavenworth boys tennis tournament.

Team scores were unavailable.

O’Neal defeated Shawnee Mission West’s Steve Harrington, 6-4, 6-0, in the first round before dropping his next two matches. The Potter-Smith tandem won its opening match, 6-1, 2-6 (7-5) over the Topeka West team, then dropped two matches.
