Defensive miscues doom Jayhawks in second straight loss

In just two games, Steve Rowe has become a nemesis to the Kansas baseball team.

The Texas Tech senior pitcher earned a win with three innings of relief in a 5-2, 10-inning win Saturday at Hoglund Ballpark.

Rowe did it again Sunday, striking out the final two Jayhawks with two runners on base in the ninth inning of another 5-2 Tech victory.

“In the ninth we strike out two times,” KU coach Bobby Randall said. “We had the tying run at the plate and both times we strike out. It would be great for those guys to put the ball in play, and that’s what we need to do. Not just touch it, but get it, put it in play hard and see what happens.”

Kansas (16-17 overall, 3-12 Big 12) stranded eight runners, including five in scoring position.

“We’re just not handling RBI situations very well at all,” Randall said. “We’re not making hard contact in those situations. We didn’t do it yesterday; we didn’t do it today. Five runs should not be enough to beat us, even with as poorly as we played in the sixth inning.”

The Jayhawks committed two errors in the sixth and misplayed two other balls that were counted as hits as the Red Raiders (27-16, 10-11) scored three runs and took a 4-1 lead of Kansas pitcher Jake Wright (2-3).

The senior starter gave up just three earned runs in nine innings and struck out six batters.

“To give up four extra outs, that’s a pretty phenomenal job by Jake,” Randall said. “We give him seven outs in the sixth inning and he only gives up three runs. That’s a pretty good performance.”

Casey Spanish also played well for the Jayhawks, going 2-for-4 with a triple and scoring both runs.

Spanish, who began the season as a shortstop, moved to left field to make room for Brandon Shepard and recently moved to first base, has hit .385 since going 2-for-3 in a 9-3 victory against Baker on March 27.

“Ever since that game, I’ve just stuck with the approach of being relaxed and seeing the ball and swinging at good pitches,” Spanish said. “So far it’s been working, so I think I’m going to stick with that.”

Kansas will travel to Wichita on Tuesday to face Wichita State at 7 p.m. The Jayhawks defeated the then-No. 8 Shockers, 9-1, last Tuesday at Hoglund.

“I’m sure we will be ready to play,” Randall said. “That’ll be an important game for us. I think there’s going to be a lot of emotion in that game. I’m sure there will be a big revenge factor on their part for what happened up here. I’d like to see us really respond and have a good game. It would be a good boost for us.”

Outfielder Matt Tribble was a late scratch from the Kansas lineup with a pulled oblique muscle. He is questionable for Tuesday’s game.
