String band to perform tax night at post office

A toe-tapping, tax-night tradition will continue this year at the main branch of the Lawrence post office.

From 9 p.m. until midnight Monday, the Alferd Packer Memorial String Band will play old-time string band, contemporary and traditional bluegrass and American folk music as lines of last-minute taxpayers ship off their 2001 returns at the post office, Seventh and Vermont streets.

This will be the 15th year the band has performed the April 15 concert.

In addition, former Lawrence Mayor Mike Rundle will continue his own tradition of clog-dancing to the band’s music.

“I consider it my highest civic duty to do a little tap-dancing at the post office on April 15th,” Rundle said.

The band consists of six multiinstrumentalists singing and playing fiddles, banjo, guitars, mandolin, hammered dulcimer, accordion, bass, shotgun and washboard.
