Schumacher earns pole

Imola, Italy  World champion Michael Schumacher won the pole position in record time Saturday for today’s San Marino Grand Prix, setting up an all-Ferrari front row for the Formula One race. The German edged Brazilian teammate Rubens Barrichello for the 45th pole of his career. Schumacher covered the 3.065-mile circuit in 1:21.091.

Vasser nips da Matta

Long Beach, Calif. Â Jimmy Vasser’s calculated risk paid off Saturday with his first pole in more than two years. The former CART champion drove his backup car to his eighth career pole, barely beating favorite Cristiano da Matta for the top qualifying spot for today’s Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. The time difference in the two fast laps was 0.003 seconds.
