Chancellor among guests on ‘On the Record’ program

Kansas University Chancellor Robert Hemenway will appear today on the public television program “On the Record.”

Hemenway will discuss the state budget and higher education. Jon Wefald, president of Kansas State University, and Donald Beggs, president of Wichita State University, also are on the program.

The program airs locally at 12:30 p.m. on KTWU, Sunflower Broadband Channel 11.

On the map: Tour leaders visit Lawrence

A group of 21 tour leaders from around the country visited Lawrence Saturday morning on a “familiarization tour” sponsored by the Kansas State Tourism Office.

The tour group leaders spent a week in Kansas, and they stopped in Lawrence for four hours, said Debbie White, manager of the Lawrence Visitors Center and group tour coordinator for the Convention and Visitors Bureau.

In Lawrence, the group visited Pendleton’s Country Market, 1446 E. 1850 Road, and the Helen Foresman Spencer Museum of Art, 1301 Miss. At the visitors center, 402 N. Second St., the group watched a video on Lawrence history and ate a complimentary lunch from The Hereford House, 4931 W. Sixth St.

“They were extremely impressed with what we had to offer,” White said. “It was more than they imagined.”

White said the tour operators reported more people were booking vacations close to home.

Kansas University: Olympic gold medalist to speak at Kansas Union

A former Kansas University track star and Olympic gold medalist will speak Wednesday at the Kansas Union.

Billy Mills, who won the 10,000-meter run in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, will speak at 7 p.m. in Woodruff Auditorium. “Running Brave,” a documentary about Mills’ life as a runner, will be shown immediately following his lecture.

Mills is known for his “Global Unity through Global Diversity” speeches.

The event, sponsored by the Student Relays Committee and Student Union Activities, is free and open to the public. For more information, contact SUA at 864-SHOW.
