Knight critical of newspaper story about son

? Texas Tech basketball coach Bob Knight was harshly critical of a Fort Worth Star-Telegram story that described how Tech was scrutinizing the conduct of his older son, Tim, an assistant athletic director at the university, but refused to be specific.

According to The Associated Press, Knight told a luncheon gathering of Tech alumni in Dallas: “You can’t find a better example of more inaccurate information being put in a newspaper.”

But Friday night at a bookstore in Denton, where he signed copies of his new autobiography, he brushed off a reporter’s attempt to seek elaboration.

“Don’t even think about it,” he said.

Asked to explain what he believed to be inaccurate, he replied: “That’s the worst piece of garbage I’ve seen in my career in coaching.”

When he was informed that Tech officials had not questioned the story’s accuracy, he told a bookstore employee: “I’d like to do this privately or we’re not going to have this signing.”

Knight was reacting to a story reporting that Tech has been reviewing Tim Knight’s oversight of the Double T Shoppe, the athletic department’s retail outlet for apparel and other merchandise.

Cindy Rugeley, Tech vice chancellor for news and publications, said Friday night she did not know what Knight found to be inaccurate in the “Star-Telegram” story.

“I don’t know what coach Knight was referring to,” she said. “And I don’t want to comment on his comments until I know what his concerns are.”

In Friday’s story, Lynda Gilbert, Tech vice president for fiscal affairs, said Tim Knight had violated university policy by arranging for university-owned merchandise to be shipped to an Indianapolis retail outlet operated by his mother, Nancy Knight, without Tech receiving payment.
