She received certification as an educator of breast-feeding. Certification is an added credential that recognizes increased clinical competence in the field of breast-feeding.

Lutz also recently attended a course sponsored by the Kansas Division for Early Childhood. The course featured the use of natural environments, community teams and music for beginning literacy skills. The keynote speaker addressed the topic “Permission to be Disabled”. Lutz also learned signs to look for when identifying abuse and neglect in children, along with information on adaptations for pre-walkers and low-vision children.

Lutz, who has been an occupational therapist with TherapyWorks for six years, received her bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy from the Kansas University Medical Center. She specializes in pediatric therapy.

Larry Growney recently attended a course called the McConnell Patellofemoral Treatment Plan. The course featured skills and treatment strategies for patellar taping, including patellofemoral pain, patella tendinitis and osteoarthritis; as well as assessment and treatment techniques for knee pain.

Growney has been a physical therapist at TherapyWorks for two years. He received a doctorate in sports psychology and a degree in physical therapy from Kansas University. He specializes in orthopedic and sports medicine.

Lucinda Smith has joined Marling’s Home Furnishings as a sales/decorating consultant. Smith has more than 25 years of experience in sales, marketing and design.

The Farm Inc. recently announced that Dale Bell has been accepted in the 2002 Leadership Kansas program. Bell is the senior vice president and chief financial officer for The Farm Inc., which is based in Lawrence. He also serves the agency’s general counsel. He has worked for The Farm Inc. for about two years. Bell previously was city attorney/assistant city manager for the City of Emporia. Bell received his law degree from Kansas University in 1979 and a master’s degree in public administration at KU in 1980.

The Farm Inc. is a behavioral health and child welfare agency with 26 offices and 240 employees statewide.

Lawrence resident Judy Keller, executive director of the American Lung Association of Kansas, has been elected president-elect of the Congress of Lung Association Staff. The national organization of American Lung Assn. staff members provides its more than 1,000 members the opportunity to participate in American Lung Assn. program and policy development and provides training opportunities.

Keller has served as executive director of the Kansas association for the past eight years. She is former development director for KANU-FM, public radio at Kansas University.

Neal Lintecum, a Lawrence orthopaedic surgeon, recently attended the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery annual meeting in Dallas. The conference featured lectures, seminars, demonstrations and technical exhibits concerning the latest research and surgical techniques. Lintecum, who is in practice with Lawrence Orthopaedic Surgery, is a fellow in the academy.

James Hollingsworth has joined the Information Network of Kansas Inc. as its executive director. He has 14 years of experience in the customer service and information technology fields.

The Information Network of Kansas was created by an act of the Kansas State Legislature in 1990 to provide equal electronic access Kansas residents.

Alicia Cudney has joined Charlton Manley Insurance as an account executive in the Employee Health Benefits Division.

Cudney previously spent more than six years working in the medical field and brings her past medical expertise to her position at Charlton Manley.

Cudney is a member of the Kansas City Chamber of Commerce and the Northeast Johnson County Chamber of Commerce.

Charlton Manley Insurance has an office in Lawrence.

Honors and awards

The Kansas University Students In Free Enterprise won the regional competition April 2 in Denver.

The criteria for judging involved how creative, innovative and effective students are in teaching others about how global market economies work, teaching others technical skills necessary to compete and how to identify and capitalize on entrepreneurial opportunities.

SIFE has played a large role in the development of the KU Web development courses.

The traveling team is comprised of Sheryne Mitchell, Mike Wellems, Laura Haught, Dave Oxandale and Laura Johnston. Jeff Morrow is the SIFE adviser. SIFE meets at 6:30 p.m. each Tuesday at the Kansas Innovation Corporation building, 1617 St. Andrews Drive.

The international competition will be May 12-14 in Kansas City.

Coming events

The Kansas Association of Broadcasters Student Broadcasting Seminar and Career Fair will be Tuesday at the Maner Conference Center, 17th Street and Western Avenue, Topeka.

The morning student seminar will be a series of round-table discussions with professionals working in various positions at radio and television stations. An awards luncheon will follow the round-table discussions.

Recent graduates now working in broadcasting will discuss what they’ve experienced in a panel discussion from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Participants will have the opportunity to visit one-on-one with Kansas broadcasters and broadcast educators about employment and educational opportunities from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Preregistration and a fee are required to attend the morning round tables and a luncheon. However, admission is free to the career fair from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
