Free dessert concert slated for Saturday

The CottonWood Winds will be featured at the Annual Free Dessert Concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Lawrence Jewish Community Center, 917 Highland Drive.

The program will include “Gavotte” from the opera “Paris and Helen” by Christoph Willibold von Gluck; “Pop Goes the Weasel” by Leo Sowerby; “Divertimento,” which is attributed to Joseph Haydn; “Woodwind Quintet, Op. 91, No. 3” by Anton Reicha; and “The Maple Leaf Rag” by Scott Joplin.

Members of CottonWood Winds are Sharon Learned, flute; Paul Jordan, clarinet; Tim Burfeind, oboe; Stuart Levine, French horn; and Sarah Dewein, bassoon.

Coffee and dessert will be offered after the concert.

Ottawa production to hold auditions

Ottawa  Auditions are set for A.C.T. Ottawa’s production of “Talley’s Folly,” a comedy by Langford Wilson.

Auditions are at 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. April 21 at the Carnegie Cultural Center, Fifth and Main streets. Men and women ages 20-45 are needed. Those auditioning should prepare a short monologue and expect to do cold readings.

KU horn professor to give recital

Paul Stevens, Kansas University assistant professor of horn, will perform a recital tribute to French horn player Dennis Brain at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Swarthout Recital Hall in Murphy Hall at KU.

Joining him are KU doctoral student Ellen Bottorff, piano; KU doctoral student Geoffrey Yeh, violin; and Genaro Mendez, tenor and KU music faculty member.

Stevens is principal horn for the Kansas City Ballet Orchestra, the Mozart Classical Orchestra of Los Angeles and the Wichita Grand Opera. He performed for the recent Luciano Pavarotti concert in Wichita. The free recital is open to the public.
