Alumni to pay musical tribute to Foster

A number of Kansas University band alumni are returning to Lawrence to pay tribute to Robert Foster, who is stepping down as KU’s director of bands at the end of this semester.

The musicians will present a band concert at 2:30 p.m. April 21 in the Lied Center. A reception will follow the concert.

“Over 12 states and one foreign country will be represented,” said Thomas Stidham, KU associate director of bands, who is helping to organize the event. “Some very good players are coming back.”

Stidham said the players will range in age from 21 to 80. Last week, 130 former KU musicians had registered for the event.

Cindy Koester, office manager for the band program, said it is no surprise Foster’s students want to pay tribute to him.

“Mr. Foster’s energy level is incredible, and it’s always been toward the kids and the band,” she said. “The students always have been No. 1 for him.”

The alumni band concert is free and open to the public.
