Welcome expansion

It’s hard to imagine a better corporate citizen for Lawrence than Hallmark Cards.

The Hallmark Cards announcement last week that it would expand its operations in the Lawrence plant was great news for the community.

The Kansas City-based company has decided to close its plant in Kansas City, Mo., and move about 340 jobs to three plants in Kansas, including the one in Lawrence. Although it is uncertain how many jobs the Lawrence plant will gain, company officials said the plant would become the lead producer for Hallmark’s Shoebox Greetings card line.

The Lawrence plant already employs 830 people who produce ribbons, bows and some seasonal greeting cards. Hallmark has been a solid contributor to the local economy and the job market for many years. Both the company and its employees are active in their support of various community projects. It’s hard to imagine a better corporate citizen for Lawrence.

There are a number of solid local industries that have contributed to Lawrence in many ways over the years, and Hallmark has been a true gem. It’s important that the community show its continued support and appreciation for the benefits it receives from this fine company.
