SM South defeats LHS in soccer, 5-1

Shawnee Mission South, ranked No. 1 in Class 6A, steamrolled to a 5-1 Sunflower League girls soccer victory over Lawrence High on Thursday at Youth Sports Inc fields in contest called 10 minutes into the second half because of lightning.

“They were stacked,” LHS coach Keith Nelson said of the Raiders, now 5-0.

Off a long assist by Bess Chatman, LHS senior Samantha Lopez scored from 25 yards out with a shot over the SM South goalie’s head. It was the first goal allowed by SM South this season.

Nelson also cited the play of midfielder-forward Andrea Stoneback.

LHS (2-3-1) will play today at Topeka Washburn Rural.
