On the record

Police reports
Douglas County Sheriff’s deputies and a Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical hazardous materials team responded Thursday night to an anhydrous ammonia leak near the Douglas-Jefferson County line. The gas escaped from a 4,000-pound-capacity storage tank at the Midland Junction Co-op, Sheriff’s Lt. Kathy Tate said. The tank’s valve was open, though authorities couldn’t determine whether it had been left open inadvertently or tampered with. A passer-by noticed the odor from the leak and called it in about 6:44 p.m., Tate said. Authorities estimated about 10 percent of the tank’s contents had escaped. The leak did not release dangerous levels of gas into the air, Tate said.
