Free State soccer ties SMNW, 1-1

? Free State High rallied for a 1-1 tie against SM Northwest in a weather-shortened girls soccer game Thursday at Shawnee Mission Complex.

Trailing 1-0, the Firebirds (2-3-1) scored on a penalty kick by Morgan Matthews 15 minutes into the second half and just a couple minutes before the game was halted.

The PK opportunity was created when Katy Vormehr dished to Michelle Garcia, who was hauled down inside the box.

“”Down 1-0 at the half and knowing the weather that was looming, we were able to step up right away and get a goal,” coach Jason Pendleton said. “The unfortunate part was we felt like we were getting a ton of opportunities and wanted to win the game.”

Free State returns to the SM Complex on Tuesday to face SM West.
