Abel Earns Gold: Chase Abel of the Baldwin Wrestling Club earned a gold medal at the state kids wrestling tournament. BWC’s Luke Halford earned a silver. Other placers were Kevin Callahan, Ethan Hebenstriet and Carson Wood. Reece Conklin had the highest finish among Lawrence WC competitors. Conklin earned a silver medal. Other LWC placers were Boomer Mays (bronze), Nolan Kellerman (fourth) and Caden Lynch (fifth).

Warhawk Camp: West Junior High’s Warhawk basketball camp is scheduled for June 10-14. Camp brochures are available at the school or call Stan Frantz at 832-5500.

Spray Champ: Larry Spray of Lawrence won the masters division of the Midwest Fat Tire bicycling series last weekend in Springfield, Mo. Lawrence’s Stacey Lamer was second among expert women.

Conroy JGC Winner: Randy Conroy shot a 73 to win last Saturday’s Jayhawk Golf Club tournament at Alvamar. Steve Cross was runner-up with a 76. Van Reichert and Kim Sattler shared third by carding 79s. In net, Jay Patterson was low with a 70. Chris Anderson and Dean Hilker shot 72s and Pete Whitenight had a 73.

Orchards Duffers: Orchards Golf Course Duffer League play will begin on April 24 with scrambles and best-balls scheduled every Wednesday evening through the summer. For information, call Chuck Mead at 842-1560 or Ed White at 843-7456.

LHS Softball Camp: Lawrence High’s annual summer softball camp for grades three through 12 is scheduled for June 3-7. General skills camps will be in the morning with pitching and catching slated for afternoons. For information, call Reenie Stogsdill at 749-1604.

Riley, McFall Titlists: Lawrence’s Steve Riley and Carol McFall were the overall male and female masters winners respectively in the Winnie Hesse Memorial Run for the Heart last weekend in Topeka. In addition, Lawrence’s Dee Boeck was the overall female senior masters winner. Also, Lawrence’s Junior Pullins was second in the overall male compilations. Lawrence age-group winners were Ross McDaniel and Dick Wilson. Age-group placers were Dennis Jewell, Paul Boone and Jim Dicker.

Raintree Runs Sunday: More than 1,000 runners are expected to participate in the Raintree Montessori half-marathon and 5K on Sunday morning. The races will begin at 8 a.m. at Raintree Montessori school, 4601 Clinton Parkway, and wind around the South Lawrence Trafficway. For information, call Steve Riley at 842-4351.

Okie City Winner: Paul Heitzman of Eudora won the ages 70-74 division of the Redbud Classic 10K last Sunday in Oklahoma City. Heitzman placed third in the age-graded masters with an adjusted time of 32:48.

LTC Meeting: Lawrence Track Club will conduct an informational meeting for parents at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Lawrence High cafeteria. The club is open to youths ages 8-18. For information, call James Hilliard at 841-8237 or Rhonda Birdsong at 749-0252.

Beckman Double Eagle: Justin Beckman of Ottawa recorded what is believed to be the first double eagle at Eagle Bend last Tuesday when he used a driver and a three-wood to hole out on the par-five, 540-yard No. 4 hole at the city’s municipal golf course. Mark Bruder, also of Ottawa, was the witness.

Washington Camp: Kansas women’s basketball coach Marian Washington’s summer camps, open to girls ages 8-18, are scheduled for June 9-13, June 30-July 4 and July 7-11. A team camp for high school varsity squads will be July 5-6. An elite camp for girls ages 15-18 will be on Aug. 1-3. An advanced skills clinic will be on June 15. Clark Masters Champ: Doug Clark, a Kansas University assistant track coach, won the masters division of the Riegelman 5K last Sunday in Parkville, Mo., with a time of 16:32. Clark finished fourth overall.

Salvatore Advances: Genny Salvatore of Kansas School of Gymnastics qualified for Level Nine nationals at the regional last Sunday in Denver. Salvatore scored a 36.675 in the all-around.

Gymnastics Regionals: Brendan McGarity and Scott Bregman of Lawrence Gymnastics Academy competed at the Region III meet last week in Norman, Okla. McGarity posted an all-around score of 46.5 in Class 5. Bregman tied for third in floor exercise with an 8.85 score and posted a 40.05 in the all-around in Class 2 Junior Elite.
