Zuzzio services

Mr. Zuzzio died Sunday, April 7, 2002, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born Aug. 5, 1916, in Irvington, N.J., the son of Charles and Mary (Tortoriello) Zuzzio. He grew up in Belleville, N.J., where he played sports and was inducted into the Belleville High School Hall of Fame in 1977.

Mr. Zuzzio graduated from Muhlenberg College, Allentown, Pa., where he earned All-American status in football. Following his college career, he played professional football for the Detroit Lions in the guard and tackle positions. He left professional football when he was drafted for World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He was awarded with an American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and a World War II Victory Medal.

In 1947, he coached a Ban Johnson baseball team in Coffeyville to a national title before taking his first teaching and coaching job at Edna High School. In 1952, he began coaching and teaching at Chetopa High School, where from 1964 to 1966 he also doubled as a pro scout for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He then coached and taught at Elk City before finishing out his career at Humbolt High School from 1966 to 1983.

He married Eileen M. Roskob on March 4, 1946. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include two sons, Ted, Baldwin, and Tom, Enola, Pa.; two daughters, Nancy Hahn, Bartlett, and Cindy Briggs, Derby; two brothers, Albert, South Amboy, N.J., and Nick, Dushore, Pa.; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Friends may call after 8 a.m. Friday at Lamb-Roberts-Heise Funeral Home, Baldwin. A rosary service will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Annunciation Catholic Church, where the family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday.
