Lawrence High boys tennis coach Dick Wedel’s search for compatible doubles partners continues.

“I’m still looking,” Wedel said following the Lions’ home triangular on Tuesday at Lawrence Tennis Center. “I thought we competed pretty well.”

LHS, now 3-2 in duals, defeated Shawnee Mission West, 3-1, before falling to Olathe South, 3-1.

Lawrence’s two doubles teams went 1-1. Jeff Cravens and Bryan Allen, the Lions’ No. 1 tandem, defeated Shawnee Mission West’s Ted Kim and Steve Harrington, 8-6, for their lone win at the meet.

“Jeff and Brian had moments of semi-brilliance and they had a lot of moments of despair,” Wedel said of his No. 1 team.

Jeff Craig and Andre Grolli, the Lions’ No. 2 team, went 1-1 in their first meet paired together. They beat SM West’s Steve Peteritas and Hunter Henry, 8-1.

“They had some real nice points, but they’re not real consistent,” Wedel said of his No. 2 unit.

Grolli, a foreign exchange student from Brazil, is getting used to different playing partners.

“I’ve played doubles three times this year and they were all with different people,” Grolli said.

Junior Scott Elwell, the Lions’ No. 1 singles player, continued to dominate. He defeated SM West’s Jason Lee, 8-0, and O-South’s Erik Hansey, 8-3, to improve to 5-0.

“I thought he got a little unfocused in the Olathe South match,” Wedel said. “Then when he needed it the last two games he turned it on. He hit the ball hard in the corners.”

Next for LHS is the Lawrence Invitational on Thursday. First-round matches are scheduled for 3 p.m. at Lawrence Tennis Center.
