American League Roundup: Yankees win sixth straight, 16-3

? The New York Yankees are making everything look easy.

Robin Ventura had six RBIs and Alfonso Soriano had a career-high five hits as the defending AL champions won their sixth straight since an opening-day loss, a 16-3 rout of the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday night.

“Our pitchers are unbelievable, and our hitting is starting to come around. It’s going to be a lot of fun this year,” New York’s Jason Giambi said.

Soriano and Ventura both hit three-run homers and rookie Nick Johnson added a two-run shot for the Yankees, who had 22 hits, including nine in an eight-run sixth inning. David Wells won his second straight start, breezing past the team the Yankees traded him to three years ago.

“A lot of people get intimidated by the offense that we have,” Wells said. “As long as we go out and throw strikes and make good pitches I think that we’ll just let the other team psyche themselves out.”

New York sent 13 men to the plate in the sixth, its biggest inning since a nine-run eighth during a 22-1 rout of Boston on June 19, 2000.

Ventura, acquired from the Mets in December, went 3-for-4 with the homer and a three-run double. Soriano went 5-for-7.

“I don’t think you should get caught up in putting everybody in the Hall of Fame, but this is a good team,” Ventura said. “Only time will tell how good this team is going to be. It’s a nice team to be on, I’ll tell you that.”

Every Yankee starter had at least one hit as New York improved to 6-1 for the first time since 1999. Giambi, who entered 3-for-21, went 2-for-3 with an RBI to raise his average to .208.

“Jason is obviously seeing the ball better, and there’s still more to come,” Ventura said.

Indians 9, Twins 5

Cleveland  Travis Fryman hit a grand slam, Ellis Burks and Matt Lawton homered as the Indians won their home opener, their five straight victory overall. Fryman hit his sixth career slam in the third inning off Eric Milton (1-1).

Mariners 5, Angels 4

Anaheim, Calif.  Bret Boone hit a two-run homer, and John Olerud added a solo shot. Reliever Shigetoshi Hasewaga (1-0), released by the Angels and signed by Seattle last winter, pitched 12¼3 hitless innings against his former teammates.
